Dear Friends,
The time has come for England’s Lane Books to close. After a wonderful two years, thousands of great books sold, hundreds of great customers served and dozens of fun author events, we’ve come to the end. People told us we were brave to open an independent bookshop in a neighbourhood well-served for independent bookshops; they also said we were foolish, and it seems they were right on both counts.
Brave and foolish we may have been, but we’ve also been supported and rewarded by a fantastic community. We’d like to take this opportunity to offer a wholehearted thanks to everyone who’s ever come in, be it to discuss literature, buy books, hear stories, ask for directions or even just to say hello. Above all we’ve had a lot of fun these past years, so, again – thank you all.
However, it’s not the very end just yet! The fact is, we still have quite a few excellent books sitting about. In light of this, we’re having one last month-long sale with huge discounts! Starting from the 1st July, we’ll be cutting the prices of all our fantastic stock – so if there’s something on our shelves you’ve had an eye on, now is the time to come and grab it. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Please join us for this final month, as one last hurrah for good reads. Your favourite local may be on the way out, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be delighted to see you. Commiserations, flowers, cards and wine are all welcome, but more than that we’d like to say thanks and goodbye in person.
Thanks, and goodbye,
Joe, Emily, Lucy and Muneer
England’s Lane Books
The democratic process triumphs again – we’ve selected the next book for our monthly Book Group! On Thursday 12th July, at 7pm, we’ll be discussing True Grit by Charles Portis, a singular western novel with a unique protagonist. For more information, and to sign up to the group, visit our book group page, phone on the usual number, or simply drop in to the shop.
Come and see an ongoing exhibition in your local bookshop!
England’s Lane Books are delighted to announce the return of the finer arts to our humble shop, starting from Thursday 14th June. We’ve teamed up with three excellent local artists – printmaker Rebecca Denton, painter June MacCarthy and ceramicist Jacqui Ramrayka – for a group show. Works will be for sale exclusively through the bookshop – although, of course, you’re more than welcome to simply enjoy some beautiful art in a literary surrounding. For a sneak preview, check out our gallery here.
Planting season begins in England’s Lane!
It’s coming up to that time of year again when it’s my father’s birthday. He, like all other fathers, is impossibly difficult to shop for and never gives me any clues. This year when I tentatively asked if he would like anything in particular he eventually suggested that he might want a book on growing vegetables. Aha, how perfect I thought, I work in a bookshop so a book should be easy-peasy! We have a great selection of gardening and growing books in for the spring! See below for a few of our picks … (Click for more…)
